Mirrors are the first love of many interior decorators, be it for the practical purpose or for the decorative purpose. These can be used in various versatile ways to achieve different purposes. Strategically placed mirrors make the place appear bigger and if they are placed in a way to reflect light, these manage to make the place appear brighter as well.
Times may have changed and along with that the styles have also evolved. But somehow decorative antiques and antique furniture and other items have always been in vogue. Incorporating the classic ornate antique mirrors in the home décor is a great way of bringing in the grandeur of the olden times to your home along with the benefits that mirrors usually provide.
Latest in stock at Arcadia Antiques, UK we have an 18th century Carved French Trumeau mirror.
A trumeau mirror is a wall mirror originally manufactured in France in the 18th century. It takes its name from the French word trumeau, which designates the space between windows. In England it is normally known as a 'pier glass'. Trumeau mirrors were originally intended to hang on a wall between windows, providing a decorative element and bringing more light to the room. Most antique trumeau mirrors are highly ornate and often gilded. The mirror is almost always rectangular and sometimes includes a decorative portion at the top, with the mirror below it. Those designed to be placed above a mantelpiece, rather than between windows, could have candles placed in front of the mirror to increase ambient light. Reproductions of 18th-century trumeau mirrors became popular in the Regency period and in the 1950s, when French furniture was popular. Usually these come in painted wood finish and the distressed look of these antique mirrors add a lot to their personality.
